Time is Money
The professional's principal asset is time. Whether one is an attorney, a CPA, a doctor or a dentist, income potential is solely dependent on the time available to perform procedures. Attorneys and CPA's have a significant advantage over the dental professional in that they are able to employ paraprofessionals to perform a significant portion of their work, allowing the them to review, correct or refine this work to meet professional standards in a time efficient manner.

Dental assistants are limited by legal and professional standards to noninvasive procedures. Therefore, the gross income of the practice is limited to the time available to perform these procedures. A concept called Four-Hand Dentistry, developed in the late 1960's, incorporated time and motion efficiency into the practice of dentistry so that the practice can realize 100% of the chairside capabilities of the assistant. By employing a fully trained chairside assistant to transfer handpieces and hand instrumentation, with ergonomically designed handpieces and hand instrumentation, in an organized manner, productivity increases of up to 100% were documented in the university clinical studies. Significant reductions in operator stress and fatigue were also documented and the quality of dental care was improved significantly.

This web site describes HSP and our unique, ergonomically designed, high-productivity equipment and educational activities. The correct combination of the right equipment and training creates synergy between the Doctor or hygienist and the assistant, reduces the time required for operatory procedures, allows more patients to be treated, and leads to greater income potential. This is why we ask every practitioner to "Call HSP to learn, and earn more".
Time is money.

"This equipment is the greatest thing that has ever happened to my practice!
My production increased 35% in the first 90 days, and I no longer have lower back pains, due to eliminating the turning and twisting required by other equipment."

Manufacturers - A Difference in Philosophy

Traditional or conventional sit-down dental equipment has been designed by dental manufacturers to fit their perceptions of the requirements of sit-down dentistry. No clinical or university research in time and motion efficiency has been applied to the design of other equipment. Their perception of improvements in dental equipment has historically been what HSP considers cosmetic changes. All other companies' traditional products are "me-too" in design as they look and function exactly alike, and most doctors state they can't tell one brand from the other.

HSP has operated, since 1969 on a totally different philosophy:

To design and manufacture dental equipment and systems that meet the specified criteria derived from time and motion studies at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, and several other major dental schools, that allow a dentist to provide better patient care, have better personal health, and increase personal productivity.

The design of every piece of HSP equipment has incorporated the criteria developed from these time and motion efficiency studies. The only way to increase income using traditional equipment is to work longer hours, which increases stress and fatigue and can adversely impact the quality of dental care. HSP has the only systems on the market today that facilitates increased productivity and increased income potential with less stress and fatigue.

The New Perspective on Conceptual and Functional Dentistry

Most dentists consider their equipment a normal expense of performing dentistry. HSP encourages every dentist to evaluate their equipment from an investment perspective, of increased profitability potential and functionality versus a unit cost basis. By evaluating your equipment on a productivity basis, your equipment investment becomes an asset, a money making profit center for your practice.

300,000 Unnecessary Movements?

A picture is worth a thousand words. HSP knows that a picture can also show thousands of unnecessary movements. Up to 300,000 unnecessary movements or motions are performed per year by the dentist. Unnecessary movements severely limit productivity, and greatly increase stress and fatigue. Movements require time. Time is money!

The Inefficiencies of Traditional Delivery Systems
The picture at right shows a traditional, sit-down over-the-patient, chair mounted delivery unit. Seventy percent of the world's dentists employ this concept. It is impossible for the dental assistant to transfer handpieces. To retrieve a handpiece, the dentist must turn their head from the oral cavity, twist the body, extend the arm to retrieve the handpieces, turn back to the oral cavity, refocus the eyes and then regain procedural concentration.

If this dentist was working in the 8 to 9 o'clock position, the movements and motions would be even greater as the instruments would be directly behind the dentist. Side and rear delivery results in even greater inefficiencies and loss of income. Since dentists charge patients by the completed procedure, the longer a procedure takes the fewer patients can be seen in a day, and income potential is limited. Clinical research has shown that a three surface amalgam requires 150 to 160 movements in a duration of 30 to 40 minutes using traditional equipment.

The Efficiency of the True Transthoracic Delivery System
The picture at the right shows HSP's transthoracic delivery unit. University clinical studies have proven that the only efficient delivery of dynamic instruments is from the transthoracic position. This provides all instruments in a direct line of reach to the oral cavity: Eliminating turning, twisting, reaching, refocusing the eyes, and loss of concentration. Instrumentation is accessible to either the assistant, as recommended for maximum efficiency, or the doctor when working solo.

Accessibility is maintained from the 7 to 12 o'clock positions. This accessibility increases efficiency, productivity, and profits. Eliminating unnecessary and wasted motions. Clinical studies have shown that a three surface amalgam requires only 30 to 40 movements, in a duration of 12 to 18 minutes, by a dentist and a fully trained dental assistant, practicing true Four-Handed Dentistry and employing the HSP transthoracic delivery system.

Conceptual Motion Analysis: Traditional
vs. HSP's Transthoracic Delivery

Clinical research has shown that a three surface amalgam requires 150 to 160 movements in a duration of 30 to 40 minutes using traditional equipment verses only 30 to 40 movements in a duration of 12 to 18 minutes using HSP transthoracic equipment. The average dentist works 192 days per year and treats 15 patients a day. Using traditional, sit-down dental equipment, the average of 150 movements and 15 patients a day results in 2,250 movements a day or 432,00 movements a year. A dentist fully employing the concepts of Four-Handed Dentistry and using HSP transthoracic delivery equipment has been proven to average 40 movements or motions per procedure. At 15 patients per day this results in 600 movements a day or 116,000 a year. The reduced movements between traditional and HSP transthoracic equipment is over 300,000. Most of these movements are reduced to Class I, II, and III motions which are less time consuming, fatiguing and stressful.

Net Results: Efficiency, Time Savings and Profitability

The reduction of up to 300,000 unnecessary motions and movements improves efficiency and creates procedural time savings. A time savings of 50% is achieved allowing the dentist to double production by processing more patients. The average dentist produced $275,000 in gross revenues in 1991 (32 hours per week and 48 weeks per year.) By cutting procedural time, productivity increases of 20%, 40%, up to 100% are attainable. This extends potential increases in gross revenues to $350,000, $450,000, up to $550,000, based upon the individual dentist's ability to market their professional services and to retain and achieve an appropriate number of patients.
