The unique concept of Four-Handed Dentistry was developed in the mid 1960s by dental  researchers at the University of
Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham. However, their research found existing dental equipment did not meet the criteria and allow the true concept and techniques to be properly implemented. No existing dental manufacturer was willing to invest to design equipment to accommodate the concept.

Health Science Products, Inc. was founded in 1969 and charged with the responsibility of designing and manufacturing dental equipment to meet the criteria defined in the research. The Dentassist, with its transthoracic delivery design, met all criteria for Four-Handed Dentistry and allowed the dentist to increase productivity and reduce stress and fatigue. The quality of its components and the simplicity of its design has kept a vast majority of the original units functioning at peak performance and allowing our dental clients to maintain the productivity levels the unit was designed to achieve.

HSP has continued its charter and tradition of research and development in the design of dental equipment for Four-Handed Dentistry. We are the only manufacturer of dental equipment to develop a hands-on-training program that teachers the procedures of Four-Handed Dentistry. With the development in 1991 of our INTEGRA system dental chair-unit system, the first in the industry that allows the Dentassist to be universally positioned from the left side of the chair to the right in seconds, the company has made two long-term commitments to the dental profession. We acquired a new, world class manufacturing plant that greatly expands our production capabilities, allows improved quality control, expands our R&D, and facilitates increased service and support capabilities. We have also relocated the corporate and sales offices, and our seminar training programs, to the world's first medical-dental mart and continuing education facility. Our three fully equipped teaching operatories will greatly expand the presentation capabilities of our training programs.

For the last quarter century we have been meeting the needs of the profession. With our facilities, our management team, and all products designed to exceed asepsis standards, our next quarter century appears even brighter in meeting the productivity requirements of the profession in the 21st century.
